I’m caught up… I can’t believe I had to go back and reread everything… I guess that’s par for the course here in Homestuck. I was just playing beats on the MPC.

(( ooc: Reading this has made me think about how apt it is that the way Act I ends is with John taking a bite of an apple.

John is about to enter into a whole world of mind-blowing knowledge, but as readers, so are we. It’s essentially entry into the world of the comic, but also into the world of the fandom, both of which taint us in different ways, and, because of how Homestuck in particular re-enchants the world by taking familiar objects and phrases and re-investing with them new meaning (and making strange objects and phrases part of our everyday: i.e. the word abscond), the changes are potentially more accelerated and extreme than in other fandoms. This may be why Homestuck fans are considered particularly obnoxious to those outside the fandom.

Homestuck bleeds out into the world more. It wraps its insidious tendrils around our mind on the level of the symbolic (language and imagery) more. And like the concept of the totem in Durkheim’s analysis of religion, it produces social cohesion. Speaking about it in religion, not in the Judeo-Christian sense of the term, but using early anthropological notions of religion makes a lot of sense out of it because it functions like a religion in producing a certain set of social relations that includes hierarchy, inclusions and exclusions.
